Spooky Season is upon us, people! Usually, that means preparing for the madness that is Halloween AKA face paint, tutus, witch hats, and chasing your babes around the neighborhood trying to limit their sugar intake. But, like just about everything else this year, we might have to make some changes when it comes to Halloween festivities. While many health officials are putting out guidelines around traditional Halloween activities, these at-home celebration ideas are bound to bring some of the fun back into the season for your babes.
Spooky Dinner Party
Family dinner with a spooky twist! Deck the table (or entire room) out in all of your favorite Halloween decorations to set the scene. Even just putting a witch hat as the centerpiece along with some spooky music can set the vibe. Cook up a few fun Halloween recipes that you think your minis will love (we’re eyeing the witch finger cookies). Your fam is in store for the spooky dinner of their dreams.
Costume Candy Hunt
This activity puts an Easter twist on trick-or-treating: Buy a bunch of pre-packaged single serve treats for safety (Annie’s bunnies, veggie straws, mini candy bars etc.), hide them around your yard (or even in your house) and let your costume-clad minis hunt for the goods! It’s the perfect COVID compromise: your babes still get to dress up in costumes, run around, and gather tons of treats. Plus, if there’s another family in your quarantine crew, this is a great tag team activity.
Face Paint Party
Order some cheap face paint, lay out old newspaper and let your little dictate their new face. Even if you’re not artistic, you can fumble your way through spider, butterfly, or cat face paint. Trust us, your little’s excitement will be well worth the mess.
Pumpkin Painting
Obviously, carving pumpkins is a major Halloween activity. However, we tend to lean towards painting because it’s a lot safer and easier for kids! Grab some mini pumpkins and washable paint, lay down a bunch of old newspaper, and get crafty!
Halloween Movie Night
Ok, this is an obvious one. But let’s be honest, watching Halloween movies like Hocus Pocus and Charlie Brown’s The Great Pumpkin is and always will be the best part of Halloween. Throw on the movie (check out this list for the best kids Halloween movies on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and Disney+), light a few candles, grab your favorite candy or popcorn, and let the movie work its magic!
Monster Mash Dance Party
If you’re missing pre-COVID dance parties, we hear ya! What better way to get the energy up then throwing yourself a good old monster mash dance party. Set the vibe for your dance floor with decorations, lights, or even candies. Gear up in your costumes, throw some of your favorite Halloween jams on the speaker, and get down and boogie.
DIY Costumes
Not wanting to go into crowded, overwhelming popup Halloween stores? Join the club. COVID gives us the perfect excuse to ditch the dreaded costume shopping process and create a fun DIY costume for (or with!) your mini. Check out this list of 98 Homemade Halloween Costumes and get ready to get crafty.
