By now, you have probably heard a bit about probiotics and gut health and have even dabbled into taking a probiotic yourself. There continues to be an explosion of medical research into the microbiome and the health benefits of probiotics. But should your baby or child consume them?

The short answer is yes. Probiotics are live microorganisms, often referred to as “good” or “friendly” bacteria, that can provide a variety of health benefits. Your child’s gut health is important and impacts how they feel on a daily basis. A healthy gut flora improves digestion, alleviates certain health issues and supports a stronger immune system. In fact, 80% of their immune system is found in the gut! For kiddos, Little Spoon’s YoGos are an excellent source of probiotics. Made with whole milk Greek yogurt, YoGos offer 4g of hearty protein per serving, made with hidden veggies and 0g of added sugar! So, let’s get into the good stuff and break down why babies and kids should consume probiotics!

Probiotics 101: Why Your Kid’s Gut Needs the Good Stuff

Happy Tummies = Happy Babies

Probiotics are the real MVPs when it comes to gut health. Studies show they can help with colic, constipation, diarrhea and even conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. They’re also clutch for shortening bouts of acute diarrhea (looking at you, rotavirus and antibiotic-induced tummy troubles).

Stronger Immunity Starts in the Gut

Did you know 80% of your immune system lives in your gut? That means a happy gut = a stronger defense against sniffles, bugs and sick days. Probiotics help boost immune function and keep those pesky germs in check.

Bye-Bye Allergies & Eczema

Probiotics may help manage allergies and skin issues like eczema. Even during pregnancy (especially in the third trimester), taking probiotics can lower a baby’s risk of developing food allergies, asthma and other immune-related conditions.

Gut-Brain Connection = Mood Magic

Your kid’s gut isn’t just about digestion—it’s also linked to their brain! Research shows probiotics can help with mood, stress and even mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. Basically, a balanced gut could mean a happier, more chill kiddo.

Does Your Kid Need Probiotics?

  • Born via C-section or not breastfed? They might have missed out on beneficial bacteria from vaginal birth or breast milk.
  • Took antibiotics early on? These meds wipe out all bacteria—good and bad. Probiotics help rebuild the balance.

Long story short, don’t be afraid of probiotics and give your little one’s gut some love. A strong microbiome means better digestion, immunity and even mental well-being for your kiddo!
