As much as Mother’s Day is supposed to feel special, somehow it often feels like yet another day you need to plan. It can feel overwhelming to try and savor every second of a day that’s “just for you”. So let this be the reminder you need today: whatever you want is what you’re doing this Mother’s Day.
Some moms want to spend the entire day with their families—complete with a breakfast in bed and handmade cards. Others want to spend the day alone because, let’s be honest, for plenty of us there’s no sound greater than complete and utter silence.
We tapped a couple moms in our rolodex to hear from them: What’s your ideal Mother’s Day?
“Our family grew by one since last Mother’s Day and we are excited to spend some quality time at home and outside. For me, Mother’s Day is taking a step back and enjoying the little ones that made me a mom! I’m excited to pause the noise of the everyday hustle to enjoy the little moments as a family.”
– Danae, Customer Care Lead
“Mother’s day to me is a moment to celebrate the beautiful responsibility of motherhood. I appreciate being seen and acknowledged by the ones I love and try to do the same for all the mothers in my life.”
– Jennien, Strategic Analytics Manager
“My favorite part of Mother’s Day is seeing my kids work together on their little ‘secret’ plans. Watching them bond together is the ultimate gift.”
– Monique, Lifecycle Marketing Manager
What if I don’t feel up to celebrating?
Mother’s Day can be loaded. Maybe you’ve experienced the loss of a parent, you’re experiencing infertility or you’re working through a complicated mother-child dynamic.
Wherever you fall on this scale, just know that you’re not on this journey alone. If Mother’s Day isn’t your preferred holiday, try to keep the line of communication open with your partner or friends.
Can I make meaningful memories without extravagant plans?
Yup, sure can. One way? A simple card game, made by yours truly, plus our friends at The Skin Deep. Spark real conversation, a whole lot of laughter and a few, “wait…my kid is wildly profound!?” moments with our Limited Edition Card Game–a deck of 13 meaningful questions, designed for families to play together. Check out a few parents + kids who have already played the game on YouTube.
The most important thing to take away from Mother’s Day, however you choose to spend it, is to take care of yourself. Don’t put pressure on yourself (screw that!) and try to avoid making so many plans that you feel like you need another day just to recover. This Mother’s Day, give yourself the gift of grace, patience and maybe a little sweet treat.
