How to Travel With Your Newborn During the Holidays

Samantha Goldberg, founder of Newborn Prep 101, shares five of her favorite tips for mastering the art of traveling with your newborn during the holiday season!

Embarking on a journey with a newborn may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and a few essential tips, it can be a manageable and even enjoyable experience. Who knew?! Whether you’re heading to visit family, going on a vacation, or simply taking a short trip, traveling with a newborn requires special considerations and we’re here to make it a smooth journey for the whole fam.

Choose the Right Time to Travel:

We can’t express how important this one is! If possible, plan your travel during your baby’s nap time or when they are naturally more relaxed. This can minimize disruptions and increase the likelihood of a peaceful journey. Additionally, consider avoiding peak travel times to reduce stress. You’ll feel like an actual superhero if you can make it through airport security without a peep from your little one.

Whether you’re driving or flying, consider the best transportation option for your family. If driving,  try to create a travel agenda with time blocks so you feel less overwhelmed by the ever-increasing ETA as you encounter bathroom breaks, snack runs, leg stretches, diaper changes and traffic. When flying, try to see if the flight staff at your gate will allow you to board first. There’s nothing worse than climbing to your middle seat while trying to not wake your, hopefully, sleeping little one. Been there, done that.

Think of Everything, and We Mean Everything:

Pack your baby’s essentials in an organized manner to make them easily accessible. Try to think of your packing list as an act of creating miniature on-the-go kits for yourself. This way, you’re not digging around with one hand during your travels, trying to feel for that specific binky at the bottom of your bag.

  • Diaper bag or backpack: Player’s choice. Both have pros in the sense that they allow you to travel to and from the changing station with ease. Keep this puppy stocked with diapers, a changing pad, an extra changing pad, and a set of clothes. As you are trying to master the schedule by which your little one does their business, they are too! Having these items within arm’s reach can make the journey smoother and more comfortable. As bulky as it can be to travel with a few extra quantities of everything in your bag, your future self will undoubtedly thank you for it.
  • Wipes, wipes, and more wipes: Now that you’re a parent, it is a rite of passage for you to be responsible for having all kinds of wipes on your person at all times. Clorox wipes, you’ve got the travel pack. Baby wipes, you have an opened and unopened pack in each side compartment of your bag. Lens wipes, you’ve got those, too, for good measure.
  • Portable fan: we like to think of this one as the underdog of these necessities. As you travel with your baby, you will likely get really hot, really fast. And, that’s okay! You’re not only managing to get yourself from Point A to Point B, but you are also responsible for your new tiny human, and all of their luggage. That first breeze from your portable fan will feel like a breath of fresh air, literally.
  • Nipple cream: speaks for itself, and it also doubles as an incredible lip balm! We won’t let you travel during the holidays with chapped, dry lips. Opt for a cream that comes in a tube packaging for easy access, rather than a container where the cap screws on and off—it’s just one more thing for you to likely lose during the expedition of traveling.

Ensure a Full Belly Before Departure:

According to Snickers, you’re not you when you’re hungry. And neither are your babies! They will make all sorts of sounds and squirms to let you know that they need some formula milk on the scene, pronto. A full belly and a fresh diaper can go a long way in ensuring a peaceful start to your trip. Check to make sure that you can take your baby food on the go, and find ways to keep things stored fresh! If you’re breastfeeding, nurse your baby before departure or bring expressed milk if you’re bottle-feeding. This can help soothe your baby and promote sleep during the journey.

Pack Entertainment:

Toss in a few soft toys or that special blanket that always seems to calm your little one down, and don’t forget a pacifier for those moments when things might get a bit loud. Pro tip: white noise and chill music apps are total lifesavers on long trips. They can work magic in creating this zen bubble that keeps your baby relaxed and maybe (fingers crossed) even help them catch some z’s while you’re on the move. A little planning goes a long way in making travel with a tiny human way less stressful.

Be Flexible and Be Patient:

Flexibility is key when traveling with a newborn. Be prepared for unexpected detours, delays, and diaper emergencies. Stay calm, be patient, and *try* to go with the flow. A positive attitude can make a significant difference in how you and your baby experience the journey.

Traveling with a newborn requires careful planning and a willingness to adapt to the unpredictable nature of life with a little one. By considering your baby’s needs, packing thoughtfully, and maintaining a flexible mindset, you can create a positive and memorable travel experience for your family.
