What 3 words best describe your parenting experience to date?

Activated, committed, exhausted

What’s one of the hardest or most surprising things about being a parent that people wouldn’t expect or don’t usually talk about?

Hardest was 100% the depression I experienced during my pregnancy. I had always feared childbirth and raising a newborn, but I did not expect to fall into a very serious depression while caring for a baby.

However, because I expected the absolute worst of the first six months of parenthood, I was (and continue to be) pleasantly surprised by how totally wonderful the experience has been.

What were some of your “wait...is this normal??” moments once you became a parent?

Being terrified to poop for a week after childbirth!

What’s one of your favorite parenting hacks that helps keep you sane (that other parents should know about and start doing ASAP)?

New parents spend a lot time at home. Make your home your sanctuary. Turn it into a space you truly enjoy spending time in. I’m not talking about nesting & spending money to spruce up the nursery. This is about putting an effort into cleaning as you go. Make your bed. Put the laundry away. Do the dishes. It might be hard to find the time, but work with your partner to get into the habit of doing these sometimes seemingly impossible tasks. Sounds small & insignificant, but makes a HUGE difference.

Also… take your friends up on their genuine offers to help. Be specific. Let them bring you food, ask THEM to do your dishes and laundry! Our community is here to support us. Listen for the offers and ask for help.
